Biography
Edinburgh whispered him into the world on 16 April 1867, and by the time silent-film audiences first caught sight of Spottiswoode Aitken, his Scottish cadence had already seasoned decades of stagecraft. He slipped into D. W. Griffith’s America and became the haunted face of Dr. Cameron in The Birth of a Nation (1915), then traded Civil War anguish for South-American intrigue in The Americano (1916) and ghostly obsession in The White Circle (1920). Off-camera he shared his life with Marion Dana Jones; together they crossed an ocean and a continent, settling under the California sun. Los Angeles closed his final scene on 26 February 1933, but the flicker of his performances still travels frame-by-frame through a century of light.
