Biography
Lancaster, Missouri, greeted the world with Rupert Hughes on 31 January 1872, and from that quiet start he sprinted toward ink and celluloid. Over the next eight decades he spun novels, plays, and scenarios into a whirlwind career that peaked in Hollywood’s silent era: he wrote and directed the hypnotic Souls for Sale (1923), the steel-strong romance True As Steel (1924), and the sparkling comedy Look Your Best (1923). Along the way he collected three wives—Patterson Dial, a second who proudly took the name Mrs. Rupert Hughes, and Agnes Wheeler Hedge—each chapter adding new dialogue to his life’s script. The final curtain fell on 9 September 1956 in Hollywood, California, but the reels he crafted still spin, keeping his voice alive in flickering light.
