Late one evening, Pat and Patachon are at a bar where they strike up a conversation with a young, mournful man. His name is Per Hammer, and the three quickly become firm friends. The next morning, the vagabonds' temporary home - a moving van - is set in motion, and before they know it, they find themselves amidst the snow-clad mountains of Norway. Here they stumble upon a female skier who has swooned in the snow. They save her from freezing to death by taking her to an abandoned ski cabin, which happily proves to be amply supplied with firewood, canned goods and alcohol. The woman turns out to be Per Hammer's girlfriend Ellen, who has been taken to Norway against her will because her father wants her to marry a Mr Ludvigsen. Ever eager to help, Pat and Patachon send a telegraphed message to their new friend so he can be reunited with his love.

A love triangle is building up to a drama in and around the old mill. The wealthy and self-absorbed Per Persson is in love with the miller's beautiful daughter, Grethe, whose heart, however, belongs to the miller's apprentice. To Persson's great frustration, Grethe would never dream of choosing wealth over love, so Persson instead - and unsuccessfully - tries to get rid of his rival in all sorts of nefarious ways. As a result of various complications, Pat and Patachon are employed as helping hands at the old mill and become good friends with the miller's widow, Grethe and the apprentice. The miller's widow is in financial trouble, and Patachon's eagerness to help soon gets him and Pat embroiled in an arson case.

Director Jessen lives with his sons Fritz and Jørgen in a country house on the coast of Øresund. One day, Jessen announces that his boss is coming to visit from Australia, and that he will bring along his daughter, Alice. Jessen further proclaims that he wants one of his sons to marry Alice. Full of prejudice against Australians, Fritz and Jørgen end up drawing lots to determine who must accept this terrible fate. Upon arriving in Denmark, Alice decides to send her friend Elsie ahead to the country house to take the measure of the two fellows and report back to her. She pretends to be Alice, and to complicate things further, Fritz and Jørgen have in the meantime hired two strange vagabonds, Pat and Patachon, to pretend to be them, hoping that this will make her turn around and leave immediately. Once Fritz and Jørgen discover that the young Australian woman in no way matches any of their preconceived notions, but is in fact sweet and beautiful, their dispute suddenly changes in nature: now, it becomes about who can win her heart. At this point they still have no idea that the young woman is not Alice at all.
