Summary
Set within the dusty, pigment-stained confines of an elite painting academy, Kärlek och hypnotism unfolds as a biting satire on the commodification of art and the domestic subjugation of the female spirit. Professor Bradford, a man whose pedagogical authority is matched only by his escalating fiscal anxieties, finds himself presiding over a student body of questionable merit. His primary concern, however, is not the refinement of the brushstroke but the securing of a lucrative alliance for his daughter, Alice. Enter Mr. Skönberg: a man possessing an abysmal lack of aesthetic intuition but a surplus of inherited capital. As the Professor orchestrates a relentless campaign to tether Alice to this wealthy simpleton, the narrative descends into a surreal exploration of influence, where the titular hypnotism serves as both a literal plot device and a metaphor for the societal trances that dictate human behavior. The film navigates the precarious intersection of romantic autonomy and the mercenary demands of the early 20th-century bourgeoisie, presenting a world where the canvas is often a mask for darker, more pragmatic ambitions.
