Laura, a blind girl, has been cared for since infancy by Mike, Whitey, and Sal, three crooks who have kept her ignorant of her true surroundings. After an operation restores her sight, Laura is disillusioned and embittered by the sordidness of her environment. She falls under the evil influence of the gang's leader, Dennis Sullivan, who teaches her the art of safecracking. Just as Laura is about to perform her first job, her three benefactors are released from jail because of insufficient evidence and rush to the scene of the robbery to prevent Laura's corruption. The owner of the safe gives the four a ranch in reward for thwarting the robbery, and they all start a new life in the West.

A vaudeville act which falls flat after starting off with great promise furnishes the theme for this two-reel O. Henry story. No one is able to ascertain the cause, and after the cast creates so much disturbance in a restaurant that they are arrested and taken before the police sergeant do his judicious questions enable the police matron to fathom the mystery; that is, that the situation where the star always breaks down and weeps is because the leading man is in love with her and trying to show it in his singing.

Having endangered his life by foolishly gambling away funds entrusted to him by the Carbonari, an Italian secret society, London banker Bernard Huddlestone appeals to Northmour, an adventurer, for protection. Northmour takes Huddlestone and his daughter Clara to his castle in Scotland, offering them safety in return for Clara's hand in marriage. There Clara encounters Frank Cassilis, an old adversary of Northmour's, and falls in love. Trouble brews between the two men, but when the Carbonari discovers Huddlestone's hiding place and storms the castle, the fugitives band together to fight the avengers. Coming to the realization that only his sacrifice will appease the attackers, Huddlestone steps out and meets his death. Northmour, deciding that married life would prove too monotonous, gives up his claim on Clara to Cassilis.

Desperate because a wealthy man has reduced her father to thievery, Rhoda agrees to rob the poor box of the church, although she finds the act abhorrent. Genevieve Connors, a girl of the slums, is taken to wealthy Mrs. Vanderbeck's country home for a week's vacation. Although neighbor Evelyn Carlisle refers to Genevieve as a "gutter brat," her cousin Dick takes an interest in Genevieve after he rescues her when her canoe overturns. He gathers water lilies for her and notes that their fragrance and purity have not been affected by the slime and mud clinging to their roots. Although he arranges for Genevieve to take a stenography course and promises her a position with his older brother Willard later, Mrs. Lawson, Evelyn's aunt, rudely turns her away. Dick, about to leave for the war, accidentally meets Genevieve again. He buys her water lilies, and sees that she is installed as Willard's secretary. Meanwhile, Mrs. Lawson's dissipated son Dwight knocks down a policeman during a gambling raid and, thinking him dead, hides out. After Genevieve receives a note from Dwight asking for clothes and money, Mrs. Lawson suspiciously pursues her, but Dick follows and proves Genevieve's innocence.

Lucy Hegan, the proprietor of a settlement house for the poor, is engaged to Hugh Gordon, the head of a large pharmaceutical and chemical firm who, unknown to Lucy, is also the ringleader of a powerful drug and white slave operation in the Chinese quarter. While conducting an investigation into illicit drug traffic for his paper, newspaper reporter Allan Martin meets Lucy and falls in love with her. In the course of her work, Lucy has befriended reformed crook Monk Mullen and his mother, and when Monk learns that she is to marry Gordon, the ex-crook provides Allan with proof of Gordon's underworld drug trafficking. Armed with his information, Allan leads a raid on Gordon's headquarters, and in the ensuing battle, the drug king is killed by his henchman, Ling Choo Fang, thus freeing Lucy to marry her young reporter.

A struggling actor desiring a part in her company visits her home town, absorbs local color, and on his return brings a faded rose from the girl's mother, and poses as one of her country neighbors with such success that the girl cancels all engagements and returns home.
