Ambitious but struggling attorney John Trask, is puzzled when Christine Lloyd, a mysterious young woman, entrusts him with $30,000 to purchase a necklace that will be delivered to his office the next day. The necklace was stolen by Christine's brother Sydney to pay his gambling debts and Christine, attempting to shield her brother, hires Trask to retrieve it. Trask accepts, and after hiding the money behind a painting, leaves his office for the night. Later that evening, building janitor Annester Norton discovers the money while on his rounds and absconds with it. The next day Aline Norton, the janitor's daughter and an unwitting pawn of the gamblers, appears at Trask's office with the necklace. Discovering that the money is missing, Trask goes to the casino to investigate and miraculously wins $30,000 with which he purchases the necklace. After placing the necklace in Lloyd's hands, Trask is shocked to discover that it is a fake. Entering the gambler's den, Trask retrieves the real necklace, which he restores to its rightful owner. Norton, repenting his theft, returns the money and Trask realizes that he loves the janitor's daughter.

John Fenton visits a fortune-teller to gain insight into his parentage. While there, a police raid occurs, and he climbs the fire escape to the apartment above. There he finds a girl standing over the body of a young man who has just shot himself. The girl, Belle Charmion, explains that her half brother, Gordon Brewster, had stolen some jewels from their uncle and, fearing that the police would capture him, had attempted suicide. Fenton conceals the brother in another room and impersonates him when the police arrive. Later, he and Belle take Brewster to his uncle's home. In the excitement, the jewels have been forgotten, and Fenton returns to search for them. By this time, the family butler, who is a member of an underworld gang, has tipped off his friends, who then steal the Fenton jewels. At the butler's home, a scuffle ensues; Fenton recovers the jewels and learns that he is actually a distant relative of the Charmions, having been kidnapped in infancy by a crook. With both mysteries thus resolved, Belle and Fenton become engaged.

Sis, a poor orphaned country girl, is shunned by all the other children in the small town where she lives. It is Sis's ambition to become a famous actress, and when an opportunity arises for her to go the city, she seizes it. There she secures a position as a maid in a theatrical boardinghouse. Among the boarders are Jim, a leading man; Ned, an out of work actor; and Flossie, an ingenue. One morning while rehearsing, Jim sees Sis sweeping the floor and persuades the girl to help him rehearse his lines. Her acting talent astonishes him, and he begins to see real promise in her. Sis's future looks grim, however, when she is accused of stealing Flossie's jewelry. Sis is saved by Jim who discovers that Ned is the real thief. Upon Sis's release, Flossie is taken ill and Sis fills in for her on stage, becoming an instant success. Sis's happiness is then made complete when Jim pledges his love to her.

Tex, a famous detective, recounts the story of how he went into the crime business: While visiting his old friend, Jack Nelson, a dispute breaks out between Nelson and his butler. Later that night, Nelson is murdered, and the next morning the murder weapon, a knife, is discovered next to the body. Edna, the victim's wife, seizes the knife, and Tex, fearing that she is about to kill herself, throws the weapon out the window. Interpreting Tex's actions as incriminating, the police arrest him, and he is sentenced to prison. Two years later, a fire breaks out at the penitentiary, and Tex's bravery in saving the warden's wife and child wins him a pardon. Determining to solve Nelson's murder, Tex searches for the butler but discovers him to be innocent. Summoned to Edna's deathbed, Tex hears her confess to the crime, thus causing him to devote his life to solving crimes and saving innocents from being convicted on circumstantial evidence.

Lindy Gray, a little orphan who lives with her grandmother, is ostracized by the townspeople because of the uncertainty of her birth. In spite of cruel treatment by her neighbors and the threat of foreclosure on her grandmother's home, Lindy maintains a cheerful optimism. One day, a new minister comes to town and befriends Lindy, recognizing her virtue. Lindy convinces him to hire Noah, an old Black man who is Lindy's only other friend, as the church sexton. When the collection money is missing the day after Lindy's grandmother's mortgage is due, the townspeople accuse the little girl of robbery. To save his friend, Noah confesses to the crime. The minister suspects that neither one is guilty, however, and uncovers evidence that proves that Jim, the son of the town snob, is the thief. After a stirring sermon in which he chastises his congregation for their narrow-mindedness, the minister proposes to Lindy.

Wealthy old Howard Eliot is so pleased with his young nurse Annabelle Rose that on his deathbed he bequeaths her an envelope with the caveat that it not be opened for sixty days. The remainder of his fortune is left to his son Arthur with the stipulation that he must marry anyone except his current girl friend, the fortune-hunting Verna Devore. In order to meet the requirements, Arthur places an advertisement for a temporary wife. Annabelle, in dire poverty, answers the ad and agrees to marry Arthur in name only. Once the ceremony is over, Arthur comes to appreciate the contrast between Annabelle's sweetness and Verna's greed, and finally realizes that he wants Annabelle for more than a temporary wife. When the sixty days are up, Annabelle discovers that she has been awarded the old man's fortune, and Arthur discovers that he has made the right choice.

After several misadventures, Clamp reveals that he is a secret service agent on the trail of the international criminals, the de Vallignacs, who are summering at the resort. After proving that the de Vallignacs have stolen the diamond, Clamp arrests his prey, clears William and marries Diana.
