Summary
In the emerald heart of a continent still whispered about in colonial drawing-rooms, three ivory-clad daughters of the polymath Professor Stanton slip the leash of Edwardian corsetry and plunge headlong into a fever-dream of cartography, superstition, and gunpowder. Their father’s last dispatch—a blood-flecked map inked on human skin—promises a meteoritic diamond older than Gondwana, buried beneath a volcanic crater ruled by moon-worshipping Basimbi whose priest-king sports a mane of living butterflies. The expedition’s tinder: a twin-engine blimp limping along on alcohol fumes, a cinematograph that records ghosts, and a pet cheetah raised on condensed milk. Over eleven delirious reels, the sisters dodge leopard cults, stampeding okapi, a mutinous Belgian mercenary who recites Baudelaire while flaying prisoners, and the erotic vertigo of their own competing desires for the same trench-coated guide. By the time the crater erupts—its lava glowing the exact shade of the eldest sister’s hair—the treasure has become a MacGuffin; what remains is a new grammar of freedom written in sweat, nitrate, and phosphorescent rainwater.
