Biography

A summer baby of 1893, Philo McCullough first drew breath in San Bernardino, California, and spent the next eight decades turning that breath into silver-screen menace and mirth. Between 1918 and 1923 alone he slipped from the stubborn heroine’s adversary in The Girl Who Wouldn’t Quit to the polished title rake of The Gay Lord Quex and then to the hypnotic villain of Trilby, while also calling the shots behind the camera. Off-screen, he traded vows twice—first with Valeri Gratton, later with Laura Anson—before closing his final scene on 5 June 1981 in Burbank, just eleven days shy of his 88th birthday.
