In the labyrinthine heart of 1920s Paris, the quintessential American flâneur Van Bibber finds himself thrust into an improbable role as a clandestine operative. Upon his arrival in the City of Light, he is commissioned by the Prefect of Police to navigate the city's subterranean criminal strata in search of a kidnapped scion. The narrative's pivot occurs within the smoky confines of a Parisian café, where a visceral confrontation erupts following the crude advances of a local ruffian toward Van Bibber’s betrothed. In the ensuing kinetic chaos, Van Bibber executes a daring sartorial subversion, adopting feminine attire to facilitate a stealthy egress. This accidental masquerade leads him directly into the maw of an 'Apache' den—the notorious criminal underworld—where he discovers the missing infant.
