Arshin mal-alan
Summary
In the vibrant, tradition-steeped milieu of early 20th-century Baku, a burgeoning young entrepreneur named Askar finds himself ensnared by the very societal customs that underpin his success. Despite his considerable wealth and youthful vigor, the prevailing Azerbaijani marital rites dictate that he cannot behold his prospective bride prior to their nuptials – a stipulation he finds utterly anachronistic and personally restrictive. Eschewing the conventional path, Askar devises an audacious ruse: he will masquerade as an 'Arshin mal-alan,' a humble cloth peddler, granting him unfettered access to women's quarters, a privilege otherwise denied to unmarried men. This ingenious subterfuge allows him to interact freely and, crucially, to fall genuinely in love with a young woman, Gulchohra, who is captivated by his disguised persona. However, their burgeoning affection is shadowed by despair; Gulchohra, unaware of his true standing, laments the seemingly insurmountable social chasm separating her from a mere peddler, fearing her father's inevitable disapproval. The narrative culminates in a delightful revelation, as Askar sheds his humble guise, presenting himself in his authentic, prosperous identity to Gulchohra's father. Confronted with the suitor's true affluence, the initially resistant patriarch readily assents to the union, paving the way for a joyous, tradition-bending marriage that celebrates both love and a shrewd circumvention of rigid social decorum.
