As You Like It
Summary
In this 1912 Vitagraph iteration of the Bard’s pastoral comedy, the narrative engine is ignited by the fractious rivalry between Duke Frederick and his usurped brother, Duke Senior. Following her father into the sylvan exile of the Forest of Arden, the indomitable Rosalind adopts the masculine guise of Ganymede to navigate the treacherous social landscape of the wilderness. This gender-bending artifice provides a unique vantage point from which she observes and eventually orchestrates the romantic development of Orlando, a clumsy but earnest suitor who has also fled the court’s tyranny. Amidst the dappled sunlight of the forest, the film explores the dichotomy between courtly affectation and rural authenticity, culminating in a series of choreographed romantic resolutions that restore both familial honor and marital harmony.
Synopsis
