Summary

Sun-baked dust whips across a ramshackle dig-site where bearded prospectors, sleeves rolled to the elbow, coax gleaming nuggets from an unforgiving seam; when word leaks that the weekly bullion coach will haul their glittering haul to the coast, every saddle-sore rogue from Kalgoorlie to Coolgardie sharpens a Bowie, saddles a lathered mare and rides hell-for-leather through gum-scented twilight to waylay it. What follows is a ferocious, almost balletic ambush: carbines flash, coach horses rear, leather traces snap, and canvas bags—fat with yellow ore—arc through the air like meteors before vanishing into the scrub. Yet the outback itself becomes accomplice and courtroom: parched creek-beds, mirage-haunted salt flats and a relentless, copper sun conspire to expose the thieves, hounding them toward a last-act reckoning where greed, guilt and gunpowder ignite in a single cathartic conflagration.
