Backstage

Weeks of grueling rehearsal culminate not in opening night glory, but in a sudden, brutal eviction for chorus girls Julia, Myrtle, Fanny, and Jane. Their manager, it turns out, is utterly broke, leaving the quartet stranded and penniless in a city that offers little sympathy. Stripped of their livelihoods and their lodgings, these women are forced to navigate a harsh urban landscape, their once-bright theatrical aspirations replaced by the grim reality of survival. Their resourcefulness is tested through a series of increasingly desperate and often ill-fated stratagems, each attempt to secure food and shelter laying bare the precarious existence of working-class women in the early 20th century.
