Bed and Sofa

Set against the backdrop of the 1920s Moscow housing crisis, Bed and Sofa is a stark, surprisingly modern dissection of domestic power dynamics and the failure of traditional marriage in the early Soviet era. Kolia, a construction worker, lives in a cramped basement apartment with his wife, Liuda. Their life is a cycle of mundane chores and casual neglect until Kolia’s old war buddy, Volodia, arrives in the city with nowhere to sleep. In a fit of misplaced camaraderie, Kolia offers Volodia the sofa. The resulting living arrangement quickly shifts from a crowded inconvenience to a complex emotional triangle. As Kolia is called away for work, Volodia moves from the sofa to the bed, and Liuda finds herself caught between two men who both view her primarily as a housekeeper and a sexual convenience. The film evolves from a domestic comedy into a radical feminist statement as Liuda realizes that her liberation lies not in choosing a better man, but in choosing herself.
