Set against the unforgiving backdrop of 1870s Austrian Galicia, Borislav Smeyetsya (Borislav is Laughing) chronicles the seismic shift from feudal agrarianism to the brutal dawn of the industrial age. The discovery of earth wax, or ozokerite, transforms the quiet vicinity of Borislav into a hellscape of pits, derricks, and human misery. The film follows the burgeoning consciousness of the local workforce as they transition from exploited peasants to an organized front.
