Summary
In the vibrant, tumultuous era of the Jazz Age, "Collegiate" introduces us to a millionaire’s impetuous daughter, a young woman whose appetite for thrill-seeking leads her to a perilous parachute jump. Her exasperated father, seeking to temper her wild spirit, presents an ultimatum: embrace higher education or commit to a marriage with a young man whose lectures on 'Success' offer a stark contrast to her freewheeling life. Rather than concede, she defiantly flees, finding herself embroiled in a bizarre bathing girl competition where, through a series of accidental circumstances, she is declared the victor. This unexpected turn forces her into a public appearance alongside the local college football hero in a department store window, a curious encounter that sparks a promise to enroll in college. Committed to supporting herself, she takes on a waitressing job, navigating the complexities of campus life. Her path crosses with a wealthy, idle suitor, already betrothed to the Dean's secretary, who develops an infatuation with her. Despite her clear rejection, he manipulates his fiancée into procuring exam answers, a scheme she witnesses but chooses to keep silent about. Her own misstep—a dormitory confinement for betting on the football team—is dramatically interrupted by news that her sweetheart has been barred from the crucial game due to the cheating scandal. Aided by a fellow student, she escapes, determined to clear his name, ultimately confessing to the transgression herself to allow him to play. His triumphant return to the field secures the victory, while the true culprits are eventually exposed and compelled to confess, revealing the intricate web of deceit and loyalty that defines her collegiate journey.
