Summary
In the dusty, sun-drenched peripheries of 1920s Americana, Hal Roach’s ensemble of pint-sized misfits—the legendary Our Gang—finds themselves mesmerized by the aristocratic pomp and thundering hooves of a professional equestrian event. Witnessing the high-stakes drama of the turf, the children decide to bypass their exclusion from the adult world of gambling and thoroughbreds by engineering a grassroots spectacle of their own. What follows is a riotous, DIY simulation of the Derby, where thoroughbreds are replaced by a motley menagerie of goats, dogs, and improvised contraptions. The film captures a poignant, kinetic collision between the rigid social structures of the Gilded Age and the unfettered, anarchic creativity of childhood, culminating in a backyard race that rivals the professional track in sheer, chaotic stakes and inventive slapstick.
