Summary
A progressive cleric, Stephen Carey, finds his enlightened interpretations clashing with the entrenched dogma of his vestry, leading to his regrettable dismissal from a congregation resistant to modern thought. Amidst this ecclesiastical upheaval, he encounters Claudia Bigelow, a spirited divorcée whose unconventional morality and staunch defense of his position forge an unexpected bond. However, Claudia's casual disregard for convention manifests in a tragic negligence: a forgotten, smoldering cigarette ignites a chain of events culminating in the blindness of Jimsy, the innocent son of her housekeeper. Confronted with this profound consequence, Stephen, stripped of his clerical office but not his faith, channels his spiritual conviction into an earnest plea for divine intervention. Miraculously, Jimsy's sight is restored, a poignant testament to the power of belief and repentance, ultimately paving the way for a future where understanding and compassion triumph over rigid judgment.
