Fool

Emerging from the ink-stained pages of the Chosun Ilbo, 'Fool' (1924) translates Su-Hyeon No’s pioneering comic strip into a kinetic, albeit primitive, social satire. The narrative follows Mungtung Choe, a protagonist whose name became synonymous with the 'village idiot' archetype, as he navigates a Korea caught in the tectonic shift between tradition and colonial modernity. Alongside his cohorts Ba-ram and Gi-saeng, Mungtung wanders through a series of loosely connected vignettes that serve as a mirror to the absurdities of 1920s society. Rather than a linear plot, the film functions as a rhythmic exploration of class friction, modern affectations, and the sheer clumsiness of human nature when confronted with a rapidly changing world. Director and writer Pil-woo Lee attempts to capture the slapstick soul of the original drawings, turning the screen into a living caricature of early 20th-century life.
