Summary
Harold, the archetypal earnest hero, and his perpetual sidekick Snub mount a rickety tandem bicycle and set out on a sun‑splashed promenade that quickly devolves into a kaleidoscope of mishaps. Their leisurely ride is interrupted when a troupe of women, waist‑deep in a languid river, call for rescue; the duo’s well‑meaning plunge into the water triggers a chain reaction of slapstick calamities. As they emerge drenched, a gang of audacious bank robbers materializes, brandishing pistols and demanding compliance. In a bewildering twist of mistaken identity, the local constabulary, having arrived on the scene, mistake Harold and Snub for the culprits, corralling them into a frantic chase through bustling streets and cramped alleys. The pair’s desperate attempts to prove innocence involve a series of escalating pratfalls: a precarious tightrope over a construction site, a runaway carriage, and an ill‑timed encounter with a marching band. By the film’s denouement, the true thieves are apprehended, the women are safely escorted to shore, and Harold and Snub, exhausted yet unscathed, resume their ride—only to be trailed by a mischievous dog that steals the bicycle’s rear wheel, leaving them to limp away in comic resignation.
