Gospoda Skotininy

Set against the backdrop of a decaying Russian provincialism, Gospoda Skotininy is a sharp, cinematic re-imagining of Denis Fonvizin’s classic play 'The Minor'. The narrative centers on the Skotinin family, a group of landed gentry whose intellectual poverty is matched only by their insatiable greed. The film follows the arrival of the virtuous Sophia at the Skotinin estate, where she becomes the target of various matrimonial schemes. The matriarch, Prostakova, is a domineering force of nature who attempts to secure Sophia’s fortune for her dim-witted son, Mitrofan, while her brother, Skotinin, is more interested in the girl's inheritance to fund his obsession with breeding pigs. As the plot unfolds, the film exposes the grotesque reality of a class that has outlived its purpose, using the estate as a microcosm of a society on the brink of collapse. It is a story of ignorance, the struggle for enlightenment, and the inevitable clash between the old world’s stagnation and the new world’s ideals.
