Summary
Venice, that opulent sepulcher of marble and mildew, becomes a labyrinthine echo chamber of vendetta in Il ponte dei sospiri. A patrician, Marino Morosini, languishes in a fetid Piombi cell, condemned by the very Council of Ten whose masked banquets he once financed. Through a stone slit he meets Vettor Ruzzini, a guttersnipe alchemist who distills moonlight into lock-picks; together they descend chimney flues, dodge halberds, and surf cadaver-laden tides beneath the Bridge of Sighs itself. On the outside, Morosini’s betrothed, Contarina Albrizzi—part porcelain doll, part rapier—navigates ballrooms where gossip drips like molten wax, trading kisses for secrets with the Spanish envoy whose ring bears the serpent of Murano glass. Each conspirator’s heartbeat syncopates with the Serenissima’s bells: a forgery here, a poisoned lace mask there, until the final masquerade erupts in a conflagration of gondolas set ablaze, reflections of which ripple across Contarina’s tears like molten gold. When Morosini finally confronts the doge in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, he does not slit throats; he uncorks a scroll of inked confessions, forcing the city to watch its own silhouette burn in disgrace.
