Summary
Jubilo, a wandering tramp with a perpetual hankering for sustenance, roams the bustling streets of an unnamed American town, perpetually evading the clutches of honest labor. His days are a kaleidoscope of slapstick misadventures: he sidesteps a foreman's scowl, pilfers a loaf of bread from a bakery window, and navigates a chaotic train station with the agility of a circus performer. Along the way, he encounters a parade of characters—Will Rogers' affable sheriff, Marie Mosquini's flustered schoolmarm, and James Finlayson's irascible shopkeeper—each interaction spiraling into a comic tableau of misunderstandings and near‑captures. A chance encounter with a traveling circus troupe offers Jubile a fleeting taste of camaraderie, yet his wanderlust propels him onward. The narrative crescendos when he inadvertently becomes the unwitting hero of a bank robbery, outwitting the crooks with a series of serendipitous pratfalls. In the final tableau, Jubilo, still unburdened by permanent employment, disappears into the sunset, his hat tipped to the audience, promising that his odyssey of evasion and appetite will continue beyond the frame.
