Kagaribi no yoru

In the shadow of a flickering bonfire, Hiroshi Shimizu’s early silent work, Kagaribi no yoru, explores the intersection of social duty and personal yearning. The narrative centers on a group of individuals whose lives are momentarily illuminated by the literal and metaphorical flames of a communal fire. Kikuko Tachibana portrays a woman caught in the rigid hierarchies of the 1920s, while Soichi Kunijima provides a stoic, yet emotionally charged counterpoint. The film eschews the grandiosity of Western epics of the time, choosing instead to focus on the quiet, often devastating, shifts in human relationships during a single, transformative night.
