Les Misérables
Summary
A stark tableau of human endurance and the inexorable march of fate unfolds as Jean Valjean, a soul ensnared by the cruel caprice of a minor transgression, languishes in penal servitude. His eventual, desperate flight from incarceration marks the genesis of a relentless, decades-spanning odyssey, wherein he endeavors to forge a new existence, haunted perpetually by the specter of his past. This precarious quest for redemption is, however, irrevocably entwined with the unyielding tenacity of Javert, an embodiment of rigid, unforgiving legalism whose implacable pursuit transforms into an almost existential duel—a cat-and-mouse game across the very fabric of French society, testing the boundaries of justice, mercy, and the human spirit's capacity for transformation amidst the squalor and grandeur of 19th-century France.
