Lumpen und Seide

Lumpen und Seide is a biting 1925 social satire that peels back the veneer of Weimar-era respectability to reveal the predatory rot underneath. The story follows Irene and Erik, a couple whose immense wealth has rendered their lives a sterile, joyless sequence of luxury. Seeking a primitive jolt to revive their flagging domestic passions, Erik targets Hilde, a young woman from the working class he encounters in a high-end jazz club. What begins as a seemingly harmless 'social experiment' to spice up their sex life quickly devolves into a cruel game of psychological manipulation. The film contrasts the 'silk' of the elite with the 'rags' of the proletariat, not to offer a message of hope, but to expose how the upper class consumes the lower class as a mere commodity for entertainment.
