Summary
Set against a backdrop of rigid societal expectations and the lush, ephemeral beauty of blooming orchards, Maytime unfolds as a multi-generational chronicle of a love stifled by class disparity. Ottilie, a woman of aristocratic standing, finds her heart tethered to Dick, the gardener’s son, whose social status renders their union an impossibility in the eyes of her family. Coerced into a joyless marriage with her cousin to preserve lineage and wealth, Ottilie watches as Dick departs, driven by a desperate vow to transform his fortunes. Years of silence give way to a bittersweet reunion when Dick returns, now a man of substance, only to discover the permanence of Ottilie’s domestic imprisonment. The narrative then leaps forward, tracing the threads of this unresolved passion through their grandchildren. In a stroke of poetic justice, the younger generation finds the freedom to bridge the chasm that once destroyed their forebears, finally allowing the 'maytime' of their lives to blossom without the shadow of ancestral debt.
