Biography
Born under the river-misted skies of Natchez, Mississippi, on 19 June 1879, Martha Mattox traded the languid South for flickering Northern lights, carving a silent-era niche for herself with a gaze that could chill milk. Audiences remember her as the gaunt, unblinking housekeeper in 1927’s The Cat and the Canary, the steely Aunt in 1926’s Torrent, and the prim Miss Watson opposite the boy on the raft in 1920’s Huckleberry Finn. The camera retired her image in 1933; she died quietly on 2 May in Sidney, New York, leaving behind a reel legacy that still whispers through projector beams.
