Summary
A corpulent, self-satisfied Berlin merchant, yearning for an illusory reprieve from the quotidian confines of his domestic sphere, embarks upon a solo sojourn, ostensibly to escape his wife's perceived dominion. His quest for unburdened leisure soon intertwines with the vivacious charm of a captivating young woman, also a vacationer, whose magnetic presence offers a tantalizing prospect of romantic diversion. What begins as an innocent, if slightly illicit, flirtation swiftly escalates into an ill-fated alpine excursion, transforming their anticipated idyllic mountain ascent into a comically catastrophic ordeal fraught with unexpected perils, personal embarrassments, and a profound unraveling of Meyer's carefully constructed facade of suave sophistication. The treacherous journey, far from a picturesque adventure, becomes a crucible for his bumbling ineptitude and inflated ego, revealing the true measure of his character against nature's indifference and the demands of genuine companionship, ultimately exposing the hollow core of his self-indulgent fantasy.
