Summary
Luis de Vargas, a young man on the precipice of taking his final vows as a priest, returns to his ancestral home in Andalusia for a final summer of secular reflection. His father, a wealthy landowner, is courting Pepita Jiménez, a captivating young widow whose presence in the village is as much a source of local fascination as it is of quiet scandal. What begins as Luis’s attempt to provide spiritual guidance to Pepita quickly dissolves into a harrowing internal conflict between his theological ambitions and his burgeoning human desires. The film captures the slow erosion of a man's spiritual armor, as the rigid structures of the Church clash with the undeniable pull of earthly love and the complex social expectations of 19th-century Spain.
