At the opulent Palace Hotel, the retired Army Colonel Peixe-de-Espada, a man of bluster and embellished African anecdotes, enjoys a holiday with his wife and their spirited daughter, Gabriela. Their peace is punctuated by the ubiquitous presence of Doctor Pilulas, a self-promoting purveyor of her own miraculous elixirs. The true comedic engine ignites with the arrival of Rito, Gabriela’s ardent suitor, who boldly infiltrates the hotel’s social fabric under the guise of a new female post-office operator. This initial cross-dressing deception sets off a chain reaction of mistaken identities, hurried costume changes, and convoluted romantic entanglements, all orchestrated to allow Rito precious moments with Gabriela.
