Sacrifice
Summary
In a world fractured by geopolitical tensions, 'Sacrifice' unravels a labyrinthine tale of espionage, illicit love, and profound familial devotion, set against the backdrop of warring nations, Nordhoff and Zandria. Stephen Stephani, a Nordhoffian agent, embarks on a clandestine mission to Zandria, ostensibly a hostile territory, accompanied by his daughter, Mary. His objective: to purloin the enemy's vital war schematics. Amidst this perilous assignment, Mary encounters Paul Ekald, a Zandrian captain, a fateful encounter that ignites an immediate, consuming passion, compelling her to linger in enemy territory while her father retreats. Concurrently, Vesta, Mary's estranged, illegitimate half-sister, executes a daring, morally ambiguous coup, wresting crucial war plans from the aristocratic Count Wenzel—a feat stained by his violent demise. At the border, a crucible of national identity, Vesta, now a fugitive, encounters Mary, innocently awaiting passage. A desperate plea for survival sees Vesta manipulate Mary into an identity swap, enabling Vesta to smuggle the invaluable blueprints, painstakingly rendered in invisible ink on her petticoat, into Nordhoff. Mary, a pawn in a high-stakes game, is apprehended and condemned to face a firing squad, bearing the weight of Vesta's transgression. Yet, the bonds of blood prove resilient; Vesta, upon completing her mission and confronting the tragic consequence of her actions, returns to orchestrate a second, redemptive exchange, liberating Mary from her imminent demise. Ultimately, the cessation of hostilities paves the way for Mary's long-awaited reunion with her beloved Paul, a testament to enduring affection amidst the chaos of conflict.
Synopsis
Stephen Stephani leaves Nordhoff with his daughter Mary to visit Zandria, an enemy country, where he tries to steal the war plans of the hostile nation. There, Mary meets Paul Ekald, a Zandrian captain, falling in love with him at first sight. While Mary remains in Zandria for the moment, Stephani returns to Nordhoff. Meanwhile, Vesta, Mary's illegitimate half-sister, has managed to get hold of important war plans stolen from Count Wenzel. But, to get them, she had to kill the count. While trying to reach Nordhoff, she is stopped at the border. There, she also finds Mary waiting to cross the border. Vesta convinces Mary to exchange her passport with her, in order to allow her to leave the country. She thus brings to Nordhoff the plans drawn with invisible ink on her petticoat. Meanwhile, Mary is arrested and, accused in place of Vesta, sentenced to be shot. Vesta, after having fulfilled her mission and learning of her sister's fate, goes back and redoes the exchange with her, allowing her to save herself. After some time, peace is declared and Mary can reunite with the man she loves.
