Summary
In a dusty tableau of frontier retribution, Sam Baxter, the vigilant sentinel of the Texas Rangers, orchestrates a clandestine gambit upon learning that the scarred miscreant Wheeler has emerged from the carceral shadows. Wheeler, now ensconced as a foreman at the Flying X Ranch, poses a visceral threat to Jud Howell, the whistleblower whose testimony once dismantled Wheeler’s freedom. Enter Salty Saunders, Baxter’s chosen instrument of surveillance. Salty’s infiltration of the Flying X is a masterclass in stoic observation, though his tenure is curtailed by a moment of impulsive heroism when he rescues Betty Hampton from a lethal stampede. This dismissal, however, serves as a catalyst for a deeper subterranean investigation. Cloaked by the ranch’s architecture, Salty eavesdrops on a perfidious cabal: Hampton, Betty’s supposed guardian, is conspiring with Wheeler to plunder Howell’s herds. What follows is a kinetic pursuit of justice, where the rustlers are cornered by a ranger-led posse. The narrative zenith arrives when Wheeler, cornered and seeking clemency, dismantles Hampton’s facade of benevolence, exposing him as the cold-blooded architect of a double patricide—claiming the lives of both Betty’s and Salty’s fathers. The resolution transcends mere law enforcement, culminating in a union forged in the crucible of shared grief and vindication.
Synopsis
Sam Baxter, chief of the Texas Rangers, learns that Scarface Wheeler has been released from prison and is employed as foreman on the Flying X Ranch. Because Jud Howell, who gave evidence against Scarface, fears revenge from the ex-convict, Baxter sends Salty Saunders to shadow Scarface. Salty gets a job on the Flying X but is fired after saving Betty Hampton from certain death during a roundup. Later, Salty secretly enters the house and overhears Hampton, Betty's supposed uncle, conspire with Scarface to raid Jud Howell's cattle. Salty informs Baxter, who sends deputies after the rustlers, and has several more adventures. The posse returns with Scarface, who turns state's evidence and reveals Hampton as the murderer of Betty's father and of Salty's father. Salty and Betty are united.
