Shuffle the Queens

A bachelor’s purse strings tighten around his throat like a silk noose when Cupid strikes in a downtown dance hall: beneath the colored lanterns of a modest 1920s boardwalk, Clarence—nimble, naive, forever smiling like a man who’s pawned his conscience—slips a ring on pert switchboard operator Mazie, but keeps the union a deathly secret from Great-Aunt Penelope, the iron-haired dowager whose monthly stipend keeps him in straw boaters and two-tone shoes. Each clandestine rendezvous sprouts fresh lies; every forged telegram, every staged “business trip,” becomes a domino toppling toward comic mayhem. When Penelope announces surprise nuptials of her own—to a gold-digging vaudevillian no less—Clarence must juggle jealousies, creditors, and a bawdy hotel detective who smells fraud in the cologne-scented air. The film’s farce spirals through speakeasy cellars, oceanfront photo studios, and a honeymoon train that keeps losing carriages, until the final masquerade collapses under confetti of exposed marriage certificates. In the flickering iris shot that closes the tale, Clarence’s allowance is gone but his shackles are melted; the couple, penniless yet luminous, wander into sunrise crowds as if the whole city has been re-written as their wedding chapel.
