The Babes in the Woods
Summary
A baroque edifice of deceit unfurls when copper-king Hamilton stages his own demise, slipping into the shadows to spy on the woman who once pledged eternity. His wife—now a black-widow in pearls—hatches a venomous pact with Hamilton’s own brother: the two heirs, rosy-cheeked and unsuspecting, must vanish so the fortune can slither into their clutching hands. From beyond the grave’s façade, Hamilton whispers caution through the cracked spine of a Grimm tale, letting the breadcrumb fable of Hansel and Gretel seep into the nursery like ether. The children, half-dreaming, reenact the gingerbread nightmare in the moon-dappled forest behind the estate; their stepmother, eavesdropping through a cracked door, hears her own monstrous silhouette echoed back at her. The recognition is a shard of mirror driven straight into the eye of her conscience; blood never spills, yet guilt gushes, and the would-be murderers collapse into sobbing contrition just as the paterfamilias steps from the wings, resurrected, to gather his shaken brood into a tableau of fragile forgiveness.
