Summary
In a modest parlor quivering with anticipation, two unsuspecting adults await their mythically affluent Uncle Barnaby's inaugural visit. A disheveled vagrant, exploiting the unlocked threshold, discovers Barnaby's tailored finery laid in preparation. Shedding rags for respectability, he performs paternal benevolence with such conviction that niece and nephew lavishly embrace the charade. Mid-banquet preparations, the authentic Barnaby materializes—only to be wrestled into a cupboard by panicked hosts protecting their golden goose. His explosive escape brands him a deranged interloper; a constable's irons clamp upon true aristocracy. Salvation arrives accidentally when Barnaby's valet materializes en route to the asylum, verifying identity through tailored sartorial details. Their return to the domicile reveals only scattered silverware and a hastily discarded suit—the bogus uncle dissolved into twilight, leaving fractured kin to reconcile avarice with absurdity.
