Summary
In the sprawling, ancient heart of Rome, a tale of entwined destinies unfolds with operatic grandeur. David Rossi, a scion of the city's underbelly, finds his youth nurtured by the benevolent, if impoverished, street philosopher Bruno. A twist of fate, however, elevates David from the cobblestones to the gilded halls of Dr. Roselli, a man of means who adopts him, raising him alongside his own daughter, Roma. Their bond blossoms into an engagement, a promise of a future woven from shared affection and privilege. Yet, the tranquility is shattered by the drums of war and the untimely demise of Dr. Roselli. David, propelled by a sense of duty, enlists with Bruno, leaving behind a city teetering on the brink of profound ideological transformation. While David confronts the brutal realities of conflict, Roma, a burgeoning sculptor, finds patronage under the charismatic Baron Bonelli. Unbeknownst to her, Bonelli is the clandestine architect of Rome's burgeoning Communist movement, a shadowy power player with designs far grander than artistic patronage. The war's end brings David back to a changed Rome and a transformed self, aligning his fervent loyalties with the ascendant figure of Benito Mussolini. The stage is thus set for a devastating collision: David, now a staunch Fascist, discovers his beloved Roma’s benefactor is none other than Baron Bonelli, his ideological antithesis and a man whose machinations threaten to unravel the very fabric of their shared past and the future of the Eternal City itself.
