The Failure
Summary
In the gas-lit labyrinth of pre-war Broadway, Isaac Shuman—a velvet-gloved predator masquerading as a benevolent impresario—trawls the marquees for dewy aspirants, trading applause for chastity beneath the proscenium’s leer. Tom Warder, ink-stained knight of the newsroom, unpicks the sordid tapestry, splashing Shuman’s predations across front pages; the mogul flees under moonlight, vows like daggers hurled at the journalist. Years later, Shuman slinks back, older, crueler, armed with forged affidavits and a jurist in his pocket; Tom is clapped in stripes, the clang of iron doors echoing like a kettledrum of injustice. From the penitentiary’s shadows he engineers a byzantine reprisal—shiv-sharp testimony, clandestine ledgers, a chorus-girl confessional—until the spotlight swings, scalding Shuman in its glare and leaving his empire a smoldering ruin.
Synopsis
Theatrical manager Isaac Shuman has a reputation for taking advantage of young girls who want to become stars on Broadway. Reporter Tom Warder investigates these stories and exposes Shuman in his newspaper. Shuman threatens to kill Warder, then leaves town.
