Summary
In the labyrinthine social architecture of the 1920s, Irene finds herself ensnared in a paradox of altruism and perceived infidelity. Driven by a fervent desire to elevate her husband Donald’s architectural career, she cultivates a precarious alliance with Davies, a sybaritic socialite whose influence promises the keys to a lucrative contract. However, this domestic maneuvering is weaponized by Graves, a predatory publisher specializing in the currency of scandal. When Graves disseminates a fabricated narrative of Irene’s adultery, the social fabric disintegrates, leading to a fatal climax where Davies is discovered murdered. The shadow of the gallows looms over both Donald and Irene’s brother, Philip Dupre, as the legal system mistakes circumstantial evidence for absolute truth. In a final, desperate reclamation of agency, Irene transcends the role of the passive victim, engineering a psychological confrontation with Graves to extract the confession that unravels his web of blackmail and restores her family’s shattered honor.
