The Incomparable Mistress Bellairs
Summary
In a candle-scented manor where privilege drips from damask like wax, a lowly maid—gaze sharp as cut-crystal—re-choreographs destiny: she nudges her titled mistress away from a titled suitor’s gold-leafed cage and toward a penniless Irish fiddler whose laughter cracks marble. What unfolds is a moonlit chess match of forged letters, switched bouquets, and a single blood-red fan flicked open at a masque where silhouettes waltz across parquet like guilty secrets. The lovers escape at dawn through a servants’ tunnel, leaving the lord clutching a mortgage deed instead of a bridal garter, while the maid, pockets heavy with pawned diamonds, vanishes into fog that smells of river rot and revolution.
Synopsis
A maid plots to wed her mistress to a poor Irishman instead of a rich Lord.
