Summary

Returning from the mud‑caked trenches of France, Jack Duncan steps into the quiet domesticity of a modest home, his infant son cooing in the cradle, his wife Sally's smile a fragile promise of normalcy. The Loring Steel Mills, the town's industrial heart, has already reassigned his drafting desk to a faceless replacement, relegating Jack to the clangorous machine shop where the air smells of oil and desperation. In this crucible, he becomes the target of a fevered cadre of Red agitators, their rhetoric a potent mixture of camaraderie and menace, drawn to Jack by his reputation among returning soldiers. The agitators engineer a bureaucratic discharge that strips Jack of his modest wages just as the mortgage looms, and their persuasive narratives of systemic injustice coax him into their fold. As the conspirators plot to torch the mill and the Loring homestead, igniting a broader town riot, a sober socialist voice emerges, advocating tempered reforms over violent upheaval. At a charged workers' assembly, Jack, now a reluctant orator, invokes American ideals, warning Loring of impending chaos. Reinforcements from a nearby army camp intervene, quelling the insurrection. Synopsis

Jack Duncan returns from the war in France to his wife and baby and learns that his job as a draftsman at the Loring Steel Mills has been taken. Given work in the machine shop, Jack becomes the prey of Red agitators who want him because of his popularity with soldiers. The Reds cause Jack's discharge just when his house payments come due, and when they convince him of the injustice of his situation, he joins their ranks. After learning of plans to burn the factory and Loring's home, and start a riot in the town, Jack is won over by a socialist's arguments advocating mild reforms. At a meeting of workingmen, Jack praises Americanism. He warns Loring and, with soldiers at a nearby camp, quells the riot. After a woman agitator kills her comrades and then shoots herself, Jack arrives home to save his wife from an attack by a Red ringleader. Jack is then made a foreman at the mill.
