6.2/10

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. 13 Hours by Air remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for 1930s studio B-movies where everyone talks like they’re in a screwball comedy even when they’re being held at gunpoint, sure. It’s a breezy watch. But if you’re looking for a tight, logical thriller, skip it. You’ll probably hate how the tone shifts every ten minutes, and the whole premise hinges on a bet that feels kind of gross by today's standards.
Fred MacMurray is the guy in the pilot’s seat. He’s doing that thing he does—the charming, slightly smarmy guy who thinks he’s the smartest person in the room. He makes a bet with the stewardess, played by the reliable Ruth Donnelly, that he can get Joan Bennett to have dinner with him. It’s the kind of 1930s setup that makes you roll your eyes, but it sets the stage for a weirdly crowded flight.
The plane is like a bus that stops for plot points. There’s a count, a doctor, a criminal, and a damsel in distress, all crammed into a cabin that looks like a cardboard set. The lightning effects are just lights flickering on and off, which is actually kind of endearing. It’s not trying to look real, it’s trying to look busy.
There is a moment where the plane is forced into an emergency landing, and the way the passengers react is just wild. Instead of panicking, they mostly just look inconvenienced. It reminds me of the chaotic energy in The Floating College, where the stakes are supposedly high but the vibe is strictly 'let’s get through this scene so we can go to lunch.'
The whole thing feels a bit like a prototype for disaster movies, but without the budget for the actual disaster. You get some shadows, a few gunshots, and then suddenly we’re landing in San Francisco for the big dinner date. It’s abrupt. It’s messy. It’s definitely not a masterpiece, but it has this weird, frantic energy that keeps you watching just to see what kind of nonsense they pull next.
If you want a movie that takes itself seriously, look elsewhere. This is just a piece of studio filler that happens to have some decent stars. Honestly, it’s the kind of thing you’d find on late-night TV and decide to stick with just to see if the pilot actually gets his date. ✈️
