5.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. 1930 FIFA World Cup remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're a soccer fan, you should probably watch this just to see where it all started. If you hate old, flickering black-and-white videos that look like they were filmed through a screen door, you will hate every second of this. ⚽
It's not really a movie. It's more like a collection of moments that someone managed to save from 1930.
The first thing that hit me was the ball. It looks insanely heavy, like a giant brown medicine ball made of thick leather.
I feel bad for anyone who tried to head that thing when it was wet. It probably felt like getting hit with a brick. 🧱
The players are all wearing these high-waisted shorts that look like pajamas. They don't look like modern athletes at all, more like guys who just finished a shift at a factory and decided to play a game.
One scene shows the crowd, and it's just a sea of hats. Literally every man in the stadium is wearing a fedora or a flat cap. It's kind of weird to see.
The footage is pretty jumpy. Sometimes a goal happens and the camera just misses it because it was pointing at the clouds or something.
The stadiums look half-finished. In some shots of the Estadio Centenario, you can see scaffolding and piles of dirt because they were still building it while the tournament was happening.
It has a very different vibe than something like New York Nights, which came out right around then. That felt like a movie, but this feels like evidence.
There's a lot of dust on the field. Like, actual clouds of dirt every time someone kicks the ball.
I noticed one guy on the sidelines just smoking a cigarette while watching the game. He looked so stressed out. 😂
The goal nets are also super loose. When the ball hits the back of the net, it just kind of rolls around like it’s trapped in a fishing net.
There isn't any sound, so you just have to imagine the roar of the crowd. It makes the whole thing feel a bit ghostly and strange.
Some of the shots linger for way too long on people just standing around. You can tell the camera guy wasn't quite sure what to focus on yet.
It gets way more interesting during the final between Uruguay and Argentina. You can feel the tension even through the grainy film and the scratches on the lens.
The way they celebrate is different too. No sliding on the grass or weird dances, just a lot of aggressive hugging and back-slapping.
It’s a bit messy and the editing is all over the place. But it’s real history, which is cool in its own way. 🇺🇾
Don't expect a big ending or a narrator to tell you what to feel. It just kind of stops when the film runs out.
It's short enough that you won't get bored if you like looking at old stuff. Just don't expect it to look like a modern broadcast.
