6.9/10

A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. 8 Girls in a Boat remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a dusty diary found in an attic, you’ll probably find something to hold onto here. If you need pacing that doesn't drag or modern-style quips, skip it. This isn't exactly high-octane stuff.
The whole thing is set at this very exclusive, very quiet Swiss school. It’s all very polite until it isn't. Christa Storm finds out she’s expecting, and suddenly the whole pristine atmosphere feels like a trap. The walls really do seem to close in.
I found myself watching the background extras more than the main actors at one point. There’s a scene in the school hallway where three girls are whispering, and it feels so much more real than the actual dialogue. It’s like the movie accidentally captured a moment of genuine boredom.
David, the boyfriend, is a medical student who is basically drowning in his own inadequacy. He wants to do the right thing, but he’s got no money and a father who sounds like a nightmare. Watching him try to navigate this is frustrating. You want to shake him. Sometimes he just stands there looking like a lost puppy while the music swells way too loud.
There is this one specific shot of a rowboat that lingers for maybe five seconds too long. It’s supposed to be poetic, I guess? Instead, it just looks like the cameraman forgot to cut. It’s actually kind of charming in a weird, sloppy way.
If you’ve ever seen Rebuilding Broken Lives, you might recognize that same sense of 'everything is going wrong at once' energy. It’s not quite as bleak, but it’s close. It feels less like a movie and more like a warning sign for teenage life back then.
I’m not sure the ending earns its keep. It feels like the writers got tired and just decided to wrap it up with a bow, even though nothing is really 'fixed.' But honestly, that’s how life goes, right? Sometimes things just stop happening.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s just a movie about a girl with a secret and a guy with no plan. Sometimes that’s enough to keep me watching until the credits roll. 🚣♀️
