5/10

A definitive 5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. A Man of Sentiment remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you're the kind of person who gets a kick out of dusty, black-and-white melodrama, A Man of Sentiment is a perfectly fine way to spend an hour. It’s got that earnest, slightly stiff charm that movies from this era just oozed.
But if you need high-octane pacing or a script that isn't held together by pure, unadulterated coincidences, you’re probably going to find this one a bit of a slog. It’s not exactly The Traffic Cop in terms of kinetic energy, that’s for sure.
The whole thing is basically "boy meets girl," except the entire universe seems to have a grudge against their happiness. They fall for each other instantly, like it's a race, and then the rest of the runtime is just people scowling at them and standing in their way.
Enter the old man. He’s the only one with a heartbeat, I guess. He’s just there to be the sentimental glue holding these two kids together while everyone else acts like a total grouch.
There’s this one scene where the dialogue just... stops. Like, the actors forgot their lines or the director just wanted to see who would blink first. It’s awkward as hell, but I kinda loved it? It felt more real than the actual script.
The movie really drags in the middle. It’s like they knew they didn't have enough plot to fill the runtime, so they just let the characters pace around rooms looking sad. It’s a bit like watching a cat try to figure out a closed door.
It’s not quite the level of drama you’d find in Grief Street, but it tries its best to wring a tear out of you.
Also, the ending? Completely unearned. I didn't buy it for a second. But there’s a part of me that thinks maybe that’s the point. It’s a movie that desperately wants you to believe in magic, even when the sets are shaking and the audio sounds like it was recorded in a tin can.
If you like movies that feel a bit broken, you'll probably get a kick out of this. It’s messy, it’s sentimental, and it definitely didn't need to be this long. Still, I’m glad I watched it. Maybe just keep the snacks handy for the slow bits. 🍿
