5.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. A Slip at the Switch remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like watching people trip over their own feet and get bonked on the head, sure. If you’re looking for a plot that makes sense, keep walking. This is for people who want to see Rookies-style physical comedy without any of the narrative baggage.
George 'Gabby' Hayes is in this, which is honestly the only reason I clicked play. Seeing him before he became the go-to cowboy sidekick is just plain weird. He’s got that same twitchy energy, though.
Our stationmaster is just trying to do his job, but the tramps aren't having it. The whole thing plays out like a stage play that decided to wander into a train station. The office set looks like it’s held together by spit and prayer.
There’s a bit where someone gets shoved against a desk that feels entirely too aggressive for a comedy short. It’s not graceful, but that’s the point. The camera just sits there and watches them knock things over for a solid minute.
The pacing is all over the place. One second they’re brawling, the next they’re just standing there catching their breath. It feels like they forgot to edit out the pauses. 🚂
It reminds me a bit of A One Cylinder Love Riot in how it handles the chaos. It’s just people running around in circles until the credits hit. Don't go in expecting a masterpiece, just enjoy the mess. It's fine for ten minutes of zoning out.
