6.6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Aggie Appleby, Maker of Men remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for pre-code era sass, sure. If you prefer your movies to have a clear moral compass or consistent logic, you might find this whole thing a bit grating.
It’s a weird premise. Aggie treats men like DIY projects, which is both funny and kind of uncomfortable to watch in 2024. Wynne Gibson carries the whole thing on her shoulders, mostly by looking like she’s two seconds away from slapping everyone in the room.
There is this moment where she starts teaching the mild-mannered lead how to walk, talk, and act like he isn't afraid of his own shadow. It feels a bit like watching a cat try to teach a dog how to be a cat. It’s clunky, but there’s a weird charm to how seriously they play it.
It reminds me a little bit of the way characters are prodded and pushed around in
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it a fascinating relic of a time when people thought 'masculinity' was something you could just buy or teach in an afternoon? Absolutely. It’s not as polished as Little Women, but then again, nobody is asking it to be. It’s messy. It’s loud. And sometimes, that’s plenty. 🤷♂️ Sometimes the movie gets so caught up in its own scheme that it forgets to give the characters a reason to actually like each other. But honestly, watching the lead try to find his spine is worth the price of admission. It’s not deep, but it’s definitely memorable.
Odd observations
