If you have a soft spot for grainy, black-and-white mysteries where people stare intensely at photographs, then sure. It's a curiosity. People who need modern pacing or, you know, logic that doesn't feel like it was written in a different century will probably hate it.
Honestly, watching Achtung! Wer kennt diese Frau? feels a bit like finding a dusty box in an attic. You don't know why it’s there, but you can't help but poke around.
The whole movie hinges on this central question of identity, which sounds dramatic, but it often plays out like a slow-motion game of telephone. There’s a scene where a character holds a portrait for what feels like five minutes. I checked my watch. Twice.
It’s not quite as strange as The She Wolf, but it shares that same weird, detached energy. There’s a coldness to the performances that makes you feel like you’re watching actors who were told to never blink. Maybe they were told not to blink? Who knows.
Hilde von Stolz carries herself with this heavy, looming presence that’s honestly kind of impressive. Even when the dialogue hits a wall, she’s still doing something interesting with her eyes. It's the kind of performance that makes you wonder if she knew the movie was going to be this stiff.
Sometimes the camera lingers on a door handle just a second too long. It’s awkward. It’s almost funny. You start to think, 'Okay, is someone going to walk through that door, or are we just staring at brass today?'
It doesn't have the kinetic energy of Die elf Teufel, which is fine, but it leaves a lot of empty space. Some might call it atmospheric; I call it a bit sleepy. You get the sense the filmmakers were trying to be very serious, very profound. But it mostly just feels like a bunch of people running around trying to solve a puzzle that’s missing half its pieces.
Don't expect a masterpiece. Just expect a movie that’s trying really hard to convince you that this one woman’s identity is the most important thing in the world. And honestly? By the end, you might just believe them. Or you might be asleep. It’s a coin toss. 🎞️
