6.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. An Evening Visit remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much patience you have for watching a stuffy old man squirm. If you enjoy character-driven stories where the biggest tension is just one person trying not to look like a complete idiot in front of someone they fancy, you’ll probably find An Evening Visit kind of charming. If you need explosions or a plot that moves at a frantic pace, you will likely be checking your watch every ten minutes. 🐢
The whole thing feels like a stage play that decided to wander outside. There is a specific rhythm to the dialogue—it's very deliberate, almost like the characters are waiting for a cue that never comes. Sometimes the silence between lines is so heavy it feels like you’re sitting in the room with them, which is either immersive or annoying depending on your mood.
Karl Günther plays the bachelor with that specific kind of twitchy precision. You can tell he irons his socks. Watching him unravel because of a simple crush is genuinely funny, though I doubt the film always meant for it to be quite so pathetic. There's a moment near the middle where he’s just standing by a window, looking at nothing, and you can see him mentally rehearsing lines he’s never going to say. It’s a weirdly human moment for a movie that feels so formal.
It’s not quite as sharp as The Merry Jail, which had a bit more snap to its step. There’s a heaviness here that drags the middle section down into the mud. I found myself wishing the camera would just move a bit more, maybe look at something other than the furniture or the backs of people's heads.
It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a nice enough way to spend an hour if you’re in a quiet mood. It’s a bit dusty, sure. A bit predictable? Absolutely. But there’s a certain sweetness to it that doesn't feel forced, even when the acting feels a little bit wooden. Sometimes you just want to watch a guy make a fool of himself, you know? 🍷
