Arbor Day: A chaotic mess of mistaken identity

If you're looking for a quick hit of nostalgia or just want to see if the Our Gang magic holds up, you might find something here. But let's be real: this is strictly for the completionists. If you aren't already sold on the charm of these kids, this one is probably going to just annoy you with its relentless shouting.

The whole premise is just absurd. Truant officers confusing a group of children for a gang of midget criminals? It feels like the writers just threw a dart at a board of 'zany sitcom tropes' and landed right on this. It’s barely a plot, more like an excuse to get people running in circles for twenty minutes.

There's this one moment where the camera lingers on a tree planting ceremony, and honestly, the silence is weird. It’s like the editor just gave up. You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you that this is a very important day for the school, but it just looks like a bunch of kids standing in dirt.

It’s nowhere near as sharp as Suits to Nuts, which at least had a bit of a rhythm to the madness. Here, the jokes feel like they’re being dragged out of a basement. Hattie McDaniel shows up, and she's as great as ever, but she’s working with a script that’s clearly running on fumes.

The pacing is all over the place. One second we're dealing with school drama, the next we're in a full-blown chase scene that makes zero sense. It feels like two different shorts stitched together with Scotch tape.

Things I noticed while waiting for it to end:

• The truant officers have these hats that look like they’re made of cardboard.
• Buckwheat says something that is supposed to be the punchline, but nobody in the scene seems to react to it.
• The background extras in the tree scene are just... staring into the void. It’s honestly kind of unsettling.

I found myself thinking about Patch Mah Britches instead. At least that one knew exactly what kind of goofy, low-stakes mess it wanted to be. Arbor Day feels like it’s trying to be a comedy, a drama, and a social commentary all at once, and it fails at all three.

It's not the worst thing I've sat through, but it’s definitely not the best either. It just exists. A weird, dusty little artifact that probably should have stayed on the shelf. 🌳🤷‍♂️
